How to Find Diamonds Fast (Best Y-Level & Method)
Stop digging randomly. Here's the exact Y-level and mining pattern that finds diamonds the fastest in modern Minecraft.
Since the world-height changes, diamonds generate deep underground — and there's one sweet spot that's best.
The best Y-level: -59
Diamonds can generate anywhere from Y=16 down to Y=-64, but they become more common the deeper you go, peaking around Y=-59. That's just above bedrock, in the deepslate layer.
Press F3 (Java) to see your coordinates and dig down until "Y" reads about -59.
TipAvoid Y=-63 and below — you'll hit bedrock and risk digging straight into a lava lake. Y=-59 is the safe, ore-rich level.
The mining pattern: branch mining
Once you're at Y=-59:
- 1.Dig a long straight tunnel (2 blocks tall, 1 wide).
- 2.Every 3 blocks, dig a side branch left and right.
- 3.This exposes the maximum stone with the least digging — diamonds are never more than a couple of blocks from a branch.
Essential gear before you go
- Iron or diamond pickaxe (wood/stone can't mine diamonds).
- A water bucket to escape lava.
- Torches, food, and a few spare pickaxes.
- Optional: a Fortune III pickaxe multiplies diamonds per ore — enchant one if you can.
Faster alternatives
- Deepslate is slow to mine — bring Efficiency enchants or use TNT tunnels.
- Explore caves and ravines near Y=-59; exposed diamonds save you all the digging.
