The Deep Dark and the Warden: A Survival Guide

Ancient Cities hide the best loot and the scariest mob in Minecraft. Here's how to raid them without dying.

The Deep Dark biome hides Ancient Cities — full of enchanted loot and rare items like the Swift Sneak book. It's also home to the Warden, a blind, nearly unkillable mob you never want to fight.

How detection works

The Deep Dark is covered in sculk:

  • Sculk Sensors detect vibrations — walking, breaking blocks, dropping items.
  • Sculk Shriekers react to those vibrations. Trigger one four times and a Warden emerges.

The Warden is blind but hunts by sound and smell. It one- or two-shots most players even in Netherite.

How to raid safely

  • Sneak everywhere. Crouching stops most vibrations.
  • Walk on wool — it muffles sound completely. Carry a stack and lay a path over sensors and shriekers.
  • Don't break blocks or fight mobs near shriekers.
  • Throw snowballs or arrows as decoys — the Warden investigates the sound, giving you time to slip past.
  • Watch for the Darkness effect; it means a Warden is close.
TipIf a Warden spawns, run. It's faster than you look — put walls between you, and consider milk and a quick retreat rather than a fight you can't win.

The loot

Ancient City chests can contain Enchanted Golden Apples, diamond gear, music discs, and the exclusive Swift Sneak enchantment (faster sneaking) and Echo Shards (for the Recovery Compass).

Bring Feather Falling boots — the city sits at the bottom of huge drops. Several seeds with Ancient Cities near spawn are on our Best Seeds page.
