The Complete Villager Trading Guide

Villagers are the best source of enchantments, emeralds, and gear in the game. Here's how to trade smart.

Villager trading is the fastest route to overpowered gear — including Mending, the single best enchantment in the game.

How villagers get jobs

An unemployed villager will claim a nearby job-site block and take that profession:

  • Lectern → Librarian (books, including enchantments)
  • Blast Furnace → Armorer
  • Grindstone → Weaponsmith
  • Smithing Table → Toolsmith
  • Cartography Table → Cartographer (maps to mansions & monuments)

Rerolling for the perfect trade

Before a villager trades with you, its offers aren't locked. To reroll a Librarian until it offers Mending:

  1. 1.Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager.
  2. 2.Check its trades. No Mending? Break the lectern and place it again.
  3. 3.Repeat until you see the enchantment you want, then trade once to lock it in.
TipThis costs almost nothing and can get you Mending books for a handful of emeralds each.

Getting cheaper prices

  • Trade often — using a trade lowers its price over time.
  • Hero of the Village — win a raid and every trade gets a big discount for a while.
  • Cure a zombie villager — cure a zombified villager (weakness potion + golden apple) and it gives you *permanent* massive discounts.

Level up your villagers

Trading raises a villager's level (Novice → Master), unlocking better offers. Max-level librarians sell enchanted books; toolsmiths and armorers sell diamond gear for emeralds.

Set up an iron farm nearby and you'll never run out of trade fodder or protection.
