How to Build a Simple Iron Farm
Never mine iron again. This beginner-friendly iron farm gives you a steady stream of iron and golems.
Iron farms use a simple trick: villagers who get scared spawn iron golems to protect them. Capture those golems and you've got unlimited iron.
How it works
An iron golem spawns when:
- At least 3 villagers are gossiping and have beds and workstations, and
- One of them is frightened by a nearby zombie.
The farm keeps villagers permanently scared with a safely-contained zombie, so golems spawn on a schedule. They then fall into a killing chamber, and iron + poppies drop into a hopper.
Basic build steps
- 1.Build a platform high in the sky (villagers must see a valid spawn spot below them).
- 2.Place 3 villagers with beds and workstations on the platform.
- 3.Add 1 zombie in a glass box where villagers can see it (name-tag it "Nametag" so it never despawns).
- 4.Below the platform, leave a spawn area with a hole so golems fall into a lava blade or drop that kills them.
- 5.Funnel drops with hoppers into a chest.
TipGolems only take fall/lava damage cleanly if you damage them to a set amount — many designs use a 2-block lava drop that finishes them without burning the iron.
Tips
- More villagers and a bigger valid spawn area = faster rates.
- Keep the villagers fed (throw them bread) so they stay willing and healthy.
- Build it away from other villages, which can interfere with spawning.
A single small iron farm can produce hundreds of iron per hour — enough for rails, anvils, and endless gear.
